WORKSHOP ON ‘CRITICAL CARE COMPETENCY’

The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, 365体育投注 College of Nursing (MCON), 365体育投注 Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), in collaboration with the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, 365体育投注 Branch, has organized a two-day workshop on ‘Critical Care Competency’ on 8th and 9th May 2025. The program commenced at 9 am with a prayer song. Dr.Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor & Head, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON, welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest. Dr.Vishal Shanbhag, Associate Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), 365体育投注, gave an overview of the workshop.

The chief guest, Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, 365体育投注, addressed the participants about the need for having competency in clinical practice and reiterated the importance of competency building training programmes for the health care providers. He also emphasized the fact that the patient care errors in critical care units can be prevented at large by keeping oneself acquainted with the updates in critical care procedures for which the hands on workshops of this kind are of utmost importance. While addressing the participants, Dr. Judith Angelitta Noronha, Dean, MCON, 365体育投注, highlighted the three ‘Cs’ that are essential for every professional nurse, i.e.,? Competency, Compassion, and Commitment. The formal inaugural programme ended with the words of gratitude expressed by Dr.Melita Sheilini, Associate Professor, MCON.

The sessions of Day 1 began at 9.30 am and were led by the resource persons. The forenoon sessions were dealt by Dr.Souvik Choudhuri, Professor, Dr.Shwethapriya R, Professor and Head, Dr.Sagar M S, Additional Professor, and Dr.Sunil R, Associate Professor from the Department of Critical care Medicine KMC, 365体育投注 on the topics Airway assessment and management, ABG interpretation, Central line insertion, and Advanced Respiratory support respectively. The basic ventilator modes were explained by Mr.Pavan Kumar, Clinical Supervisor, Department of Respiratory Therapy, MAHE, 365体育投注. Post lunch, commenced with an interactive session on Trauma assessment by Dr.Vimal Krishnan, Professor and Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, KMC, 365体育投注. Followed by this, the participants were teamed into six groups, and a hands-on experience was provided to the participants on performing the various procedures/interpretive skills discussed during the day’s sessions by the respective resource persons.

Day 2 began at 9 am with the session on Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by Dr. Daisy J Lobo, Associate Professor, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON. Followed by this, Dr. Vishal Shanbhag led the session on Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) for shock with the emphasis on its vitality in the emergency management of the critically ill patients. An interactive session on Head CT interpretation was conducted by Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, where the complexities of the skill were detailed. The forenoon sessions ended with the topic on Intercostal chest drain insertion dealt by Dr.Vishal Shanbhag, along with a practical skill demonstration. Post lunch was entrusted with the practical sessions on six topics. The POCUS for shock was demonstrated by Dr.Vishal Shanbhag. The skill stations on Head?CT interpretation, ACLS, ECG interpretation, Drug calculation, and Chest X-Ray interpretation were handled by Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, Dr. Daisy J Lobo, Dr. Melita Sheilini, Dr. Soumya Christabel, Assistant Professor-senior scale, and Dr.Shalini Ganesh Nayak, Assistant Professor-senior scale, MCON, respectively.

The program was concluded by Dr. Vishal Shanbhag with the closing remarks at 5.00 pm. A total of 42 participants, including the faculty and students of MSc Nursing and Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care, from various institutions across India, actively took part in the workshop. The workshop was well appreciated by the participants and was aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3, 4, and 17, i.e., Global health and wellbeing, Quality education, and Partnerships for the goals, respectively.
