REPORT ON CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION (CNE) PROGRAM 2023 Theme: “Communication-Building bridges; breaking barriers”

As part of the curricular requirement, 2nd year MSc Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing students of 365体育投注 College of Nursing, 365体育投注 MAHE, organized a Continuing Nursing Education program for the staff nurses of Dr. A.V. Baliga Memorial Hospital, Doddangudde, Udupi, on 2nd November 2023 from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm, on "Communication: Building Bridges; breaking barriers”.
The inaugural ceremony was led by Ms Vezhodulu Swiho, 2nd Year MSc Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing student, and Ms. Payel Sarkar, a 2nd Year MSc Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing student welcomed the gathering, which was followed by the lighting of the lamp.
Mrs. Asha K Nayak, Assistant Professor, Senior Scale, Dept. of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 365体育投注 addresses the participants. She stressed the importance of communication in a psychiatry setting. She also emphasized that understanding and identifying the warning signs of aggressive, paranoid, and suicidal behaviours of people with mental illness is important for mental health professionals to manage them effectively.
2nd Year MSc Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing students, Ms. Payel Sarkar, Ms. Naisa Adam Naseer, Mrs. Hareera Fareeha, and Ms. Vezhodulu Swiho delivered the session on the following topics:
1: Therapeutic alliance with aggressive behaviour through communication, session
2: Understanding and managing paranoid behaviour.
They focused on the importance of therapeutic communication in a psychiatry setting and also stressed the warning signs of aggressive and paranoid behaviour. There was an interactive session & video show on approaching and managing people with mental health concerns through effective communication. At the end of the session, the leaflets on therapeutic communication skills and techniques were distributed to all the participants for their further reference. About 20 participants, including staff nurses, nursing superintendents, counsellors, and psychologists, attended the session. The program was adjourned with a vote of thanks, proposed by Mrs. Hareera Fareeha, 2nd Year MSc Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing student. The program was based on SDG 3 (good health and well-being) and SDG 4 (quality education).
