Student Induction Programme(SIP) – “Deeksharambh”- 2022

Orientation Programme for students admitted to the various courses offered by 365体育投注 College of Nursing (MCON), 365体育投注 was conducted from 1st to 6th August 2022 through blended mode. During this one week of the orientation program, the newly joined students of BSc Nursing were inducted into the overall activities of the college as well as MAHE, 365体育投注.

August 1, 2022

Freshers’ Orientation program for the 32nd Batch of BSc Nursing was organized by 365体育投注 College of Nursing, MAHE, 365体育投注 on 1st August 2022 at the Dr. TMA Pai Hall I, KMC, 365体育投注. The Chief Guest, Dr. Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar, 365体育投注 Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), 365体育投注 addressed the newly joined students and their parents.

August 2, 2022

Orientation to 1st semester B. Sc. Nursing course was given by Dr. Radhika R Pai, the Class coordinator. This event was followed by the campus orientation to the newly joined students by Cabinet members of the Student Nurses’ Association.

Faculty members and the students of 1st semester B.Sc. Nursing (2022-23 batch) had an interaction. Students shared their brief details, viz: their name, place of residence, and their areas of interest and hobbies. Through this session, it was understood that many students are multi-talented and students are having interests in different fields such as photography, dancing, instrument playing, singing, sports, traveling, cooking, drawing, trekking, and many more. Mr. Leslie Joseph D’Souza, Fire safety officer, MAHE, 365体育投注 gave an overview of fire hazards and conducted a mock drill.

August 3, 2022

The 3rd day of orientation started with an introduction to add-on courses, open electives, and value-added courses by Mrs. Savitha Prabhu, Faculty, MCON MAHE 365体育投注. This session was further continued with the orientation to Coursera which offers online courses, certifications, and degrees in a variety of subjects. Orientation to Epad, a digital examination system was?given by Ms. Sweety Fernandes, Exam coordinator, MCON. Ms. Reshma, Faculty, 365体育投注 College of Nursing 365体育投注 oriented on the Microsoft Team and its practical use. She further explained academic features such as accessing the educational materials and communicating with teachers and classmates. The session was ended by a brief orientation on ‘impartus’, the lecture-capture facility of the College by Dr. Radhika R Pai, Faculty, MCON.

Following this, the students were briefed regarding the Anti-Ragging committee by Dr. Melita Sheilini, Assistant Professor, MCON, MAHE, 365体育投注. She explained the online submission of the anti-ragging declaration by students and parents. Before concluding these sessions, Dr. Anjeline D’Souza, Assistant Professor, MCON, and member of Team Employer Reputation, explained about the MCON alumni and collected the alumni referral detail and family-related information through a google form. Followed by this session, an Orientation to the ISO:14001: 2004, IELTS training, and NHS as well as the UK recruitment, was introduced to the freshers by Dr. Elsa Sanatombi Devi, Professor, Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing. She briefed about the ISO activities, student exchange programs, milestones of IELTS training, and opportunities available for students. After this session, Mrs. Janet Alva, Assistant Professor, MCON 365体育投注, delivered a talk on LPG safety measures. She briefed about safety measures to be taken before, during, and after the use of LPG and gave some safety tips.

Orientation to various social media platforms of MCON was briefed by Mrs. Sheela Shetty, Coordinator – Social Media, MCON, 365体育投注. She briefed regarding the MCON official webpage, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

August 4, 2022

Mr. Renjulal, Sports Coordinator, MCON, 365体育投注 briefed on the various sports facilities available on campus. He emphasized ‘Marena Indoor Stadium’, a world-class facility for indoor sports, and informed all about its timings and amenities. Further, there was an online orientation to ‘Utsav’ – an annual inter-college cultural festival by Dr. Shobha U Kamath, Cultural Coordinator, MAHE, 365体育投注, and this event was coordinated by Ms. Sanju Pant, cultural coordinator, MCON, 365体育投注. She spoke on various events conducted by the cultural coordination committee and the importance of participating in cultural events during the student period.

As part of the Induction Program, a Guest Lecture on “Guidance and Mentoring” was conducted by Mrs. Savitha, Assistant Professor, MCON, MAHE. She spoke on the importance?of mental health, warning signs of mental illness, the need for guidance and counselling, and various issues faced by youth. She also briefed on the services provided by the Student Support Centre to the students of MAHE.

Following this, Ms. Remya briefed the freshers about the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA). She explained about students’ participation and activities conducted by the SNA. She also briefed on membership of SNA and TNAI.

Further, there was an orientation to ‘Voluntary Service Organization (VSO)’ by Dr. Maria Pais, VSO Coordinator, MCON. She described the objectives of VSO, various activities held, and how to get a membership to VSO. Further, a guest lecture was conducted and the Resource Person was Dr. Vishnu Renjith, Lecturer and Program Director at the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He addressed the students on different aspects of learning, viz: taking and reviewing notes, eliminating lifestyle distractions, establishing a study routine, group study, exercises to release stress, and not being afraid anytime to accept help.

Subject orientation of Applied Anatomy was given by Dr. Bincy M George, Associate Professor, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, MAHE, 365体育投注

As part of Deeksharambh: A Student Induction Program (SIP), a guest lecture session on “Communication Skills” was organized by the department of Fundamentals of Nursing, 365体育投注 College of Nursing, MAHE 365体育投注 on 5th August 2022 from 9.00 am-10.00 am in the 3rd-floor lecture hall, Basic Sciences Building, 365体育投注. The Resource Person was Dr. Shubha HS, Associate Professor, School of Communication, MAHE, 365体育投注. She discussed different facets of communication, like why we communicate, elements of communication, effective communication skills, and barriers to communication. She further briefed on how communication is intertwined with all aspects of human life and is the primary goal of human existence, including nonverbal cues which take a larger role in communication.

A lecture session on “ Care and affection to patients” was conducted on 5th August 2022 from 10.30 am-11.30 am and the Resource Person was Dr. Judith A Nornha, Dean, MCON, MAHE, 365体育投注. She said Nursing care is the core of healthcare services and caring is a core value of the nursing profession. Caring behavior should be nurtured from the beginning of nursing education. She explained the ingredients of care - Honesty and trust, alternating?rhythms, patience, humility, and hope are important in caring for patients. Caring is a science innermost essence of caring reality. Eight Cs of caring-compassion, conscience, confidence, culture, commitment, competence, and courage. She also said Love is the highest concept in human care, altruism, personal integrity, emotional stability, and emotional intelligence are all needed in love and care. Followed by this session, the Subject orientation of Applied Physiology was given by Dr. Sujatha Prabhu P, Assistant Professor, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, MAHE, 365体育投注, and the Subject orientation of Applied Sociology was given by Dr. Maria Pais, Assistant Professor, MCON, MAHE, 365体育投注

The last day of orientation began with the orientation to the subject - Applied Psychology, by Mrs. Savitha, Assistant Professor, MCON, 365体育投注.

As part of Deeksharambh - a Student Induction Program (SIP), a lecture session on “Love and Gratitude in Nursing” was organized by the department of Fundamentals of Nursing, 365体育投注 College of Nursing, MAHE 365体育投注 on 6th August 2022 from 9.00 am to 10.00 am in the 3rd-floor lecture hall, Basic Sciences Building, 365体育投注. The Resource Person was Dr. Linu Sara George, Professor, MCON, MAHE, 365体育投注. She explained how Love empowers nurses, a combination of nursing care sense of responsibility, benevolence, attention, concern, respect, and understanding of others as human beings.?She said, Gratitude is a positive emotion that involves being thankful and appreciative, gratitude motivates people to make positive changes in their lives and the world around them through a feeling of connectedness. She explained why gratitude matters in nursing, and the benefits of gratitude, she also explained the ways to improve gratitude.

As part of the Effective 365体育投注 Engagement Guest Lecture Series, a session on “Trust, Respect and Glory” was organized by the Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, 365体育投注 College of Nursing, MAHE 365体育投注 on 6th August 2022 at 10.30 am through the MS teams online platform.

The Resource Person was Dr. Deepa Damodaran, Associate Professor, Dept. of Psychology, Jain University, Kochi Campus. She interacted with the students by giving activities on goal setting, ways of thinking, and how to stay motivated. She said, trust, respect, and glory are?the pillars of relationships and the 5 domains of the emotional quotient are being self-aware, managing emotions, having self-motivation, recognizing the emotions of others, and having relationships. She also explained about building emotional intelligence. She further said resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversities. Control, challenge, and commitment are the basis of resilience.

A total of 116 first-semester BSc nursing students attended and benefitted from this orientation program and guest lecture sessions.

The orientation program was concluded by subject orientation to Communicative English given by Ms. Sanju Pant, Lecturer, MCON, 365体育投注 followed by a subject orientation to the Nursing Foundation by Mrs. Laveena Barboza, Lecturer, MCON, 365体育投注.
