Advancing Nursing Leadership in Wound Care: A Global Collaboration

The Centre for Excellence in Interprofessional Advanced Wound Care at the 365体育投注 College of Nursing (MCON), MAHE, in collaboration with the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and Deakin University, Australia, organized a workshop on “Interprofessional Wound Assessment and Management” on 20th August 2025. The workshop marked the launch of a nurse-led Certificate Course in Advanced Wound Care.
This certificate course is designed to equip nurses with the skills to manage wounds ranging from simple to complex non-healing types. With 30 final-year nursing students already enrolled, the program focuses on hands-on training and real-time patient care at Kasturba Hospital, 365体育投注, as well as in the community. The goal is to build a strong Centre for Excellence in Interprofessional Advanced Wound Care.
The workshop brought together experts from India and abroad to share their knowledge and experience. Dr. Susan Hunter, Clinical Nursing Director at Deakin School of Midwifery, led sessions on surgical wound assessment and management, while Dr. Vishal Shanbhag, Professor of Critical Care Medicine, highlighted the challenges of managing wounds in critical care settings.
Mrs. Seelia Peter, PhD Scholar at MCON, spoke on the vital role of infection control in preventing drug-resistant organisms in hospital wound care. Mrs. Janet Alva (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing), Mr. Prasannakumara (Nurse Practitioner, Kasturba Hospital), and Mr. Shreenidhi Jogi captivated students with live demonstrations, making learning both practical and engaging.
The event was further enriched by the virtual presence of Prof. Jessica and Prof. Ruth from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, who shared their expertise in clinical wound care.
Dr. Tessy Treesa Jose, Associate Dean, left a lasting impact on students by sharing her personal journey in wound care. Dr. Suba Sooria, Head of Nursing Services at Kasturba Hospital, underscored the need for nurses to develop specialized skills to meet future healthcare demands. Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor and Head of Medical-Surgical Nursing, emphasized the global importance of critical skill specialization for professional growth.
The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing continues to provide students with opportunities to grow as leaders in nursing practice. The entire event was thoughtfully coordinated by Dr. Elsa Sanatombi Devi, Centre Coordinator, and putting best efforts to meet the SDGs- Good Health and Wellbeing and Quality Education (SDG 3 & 4).
