The effects of remedial therapy on visual perception, depth perception and balance on a community-dwelling older population

This study was conducted to determine the effects of remedial therapy on visual perception, depth perception and balance in a community-dwelling elderly population. Pre and post-intervention evaluations were conducted using Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS), a depth perception instrument and the Timed up and Go test (TUG). The intervention included a remedial program for balance and perception. Improvements were noted on all the factors. Thus, a simple remedial program used by a therapist working with an older population can help to improve their quality of life. Published in IJOT, XXXVI (3)

A study of depth perception in hemiplegics

This study was conducted to develop normative data about depth perception in individuals in the age range of 30-60 years and to identify depth perception deficits in individuals with hemiplegia. The results showed that individuals with hemiplegia had more number of errors and took a longer amount of time to complete the test, indicating affectation of depth perception. Sensory processing and organizational abilities in children at risk of ADHD

This study investigated for a possible association between sensory processing and difficulties in organizational abilities among children at risk of ADHD. In addition, these domains were also compared between typically developing and at-risk-ADHD children. Multisensory processing was found to be moderately correlated to both child- and parent-reported organizational abilities of the at-risk-ADHD group. Significant difference was obtained between the two groups, for the Sensory Processing Quadrant scores, but not for the organization scales’ scores. Thus, the study concluded that multisensory processing seems to be associated with organizational abilities in at-risk-ADHD children.

The task engagement of children with autism in a coloured setting

An experimental design was used to compare the influence of the differently lighted conditions (white, red and blue) on the task of categorization in children with autism. Twenty seven children with autism between 3 and 10 years of age participated in the study. The children were asked to perform the tasks of categorization of animal figurines and wooden blocks across the four differently lighted conditions and their engagement during task performance was scored according to the Autism Engagement Rating Scale. The results show that, in children with autism blue coloured setting was more beneficial when the task of categorization of super-ordinate categories (animal figurines) was undertaken.

The influence of different task inclinations on the on-task behaviours of children in academic activities

An experimental design employing the direct continuous recording method to observe for on-task behaviors was used in this study. On-task behaviors were measured during writing, reading and drawing tasks. 20 children were recruited from 3rd and 4th grades through convenience sampling. In the first step, the investigator observed the 20 children in the baseline condition and noted their on-task behaviors. In the second step, one week of trial use was given for either 10 or 25 degree inclined desks and this was then followed by one more week of using the desk in the classroom. Data was collected for the on-task behaviors in the second week. The children showed better on-task behaviors during writing, reading and drawing tasks when they sat in desk with sloping surface compared to flat working surface
