Challenges in Early Diagnosis of Oral Cancer: Cases Series Izazovi u ranoj dijagnostici oralnoga karcinoma: opis slu?ajeva

September 20, 2019 Dentistry Dr Nanditha R Sujir Keerthilatha Pai Dr Junaid Ahmed Dr Ceena Denny E Dr Nandita Shenoy

Abstract Oral cancer has an overall survival rate of only 50%. This prognosis is significantly improved when this disease is diagnosed and treated in its early stages. Oral cancer is usually associated with classical clinical features associated with malignancy resulting in accurate diagnosis. However, certain cases of oral cancer, especially in its early stages, can be clinically deceptive and can be misdiagnosed. There is a recent trend of changing demographics and etiology associated with oral cancer adding to the diagnostic challenges faced by the clinician. The awareness of these changing trends is needed to aid in early diagnosis of oral cancer. In this case series, we have presented three cases of patients with challenging aspects.

Frontal Sinus as an aid in Gender Identification in Forensic Dentistry:A Retrospective Study using Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Aim: The aim of our study was to measure the frontal sinus morphology that could aid us in gender determination and also to assess the difference in measurements between the right and left frontal sinus. Materials and methods: A retrospective study was done using 100cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images (50 males and 50 females) matched with age and gender with full field of view (FOV). The examinations were carried out using Promax 3DMid (Planmeca Oy., Helsinki, Finland) CBCT unit. The frontal sinus was assessed in coronal, sagittal and axial planes, and the maximum measurements in each section were recorded. The results to compare the right and left frontal sinus were analysed using paired-tests and independent Student's t-test was used to compare the difference in measurements of frontal sinus between the males and females Results: We found that the left side of the frontal sinus was bigger than the right side, and while comparing between the genders, it was found that the measurements were greater in males. Statistically significant results were obtained on comparing between the sides and gender. Conclusion: As mentioned in previous studies, frontal sinus measurements are significantly higher in males compared with females which can, therefore, be used in gender identification in cases of mass disasters. Clinical significance: Frontal sinus measurements can be used as an adjunct in gender identification in mass disasters and with advances in technology. Cone beam computed tomography, in addition to providing accurate measurements, has overcome all the disadvantages with two -dimensional imaging.

Clinical Characteristics of Oral Lichen Planus: A Prospective Study

February 24, 2018 Dentistry Dr Nanditha R Sujir Keerthilatha M. Pai Sunil Mutalik Nidhi P. Chauhan Dr Junaid Ahmed

ClinicalBackground: Oral lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease with an uncertain etiology. OLP is predominantly seen in middle aged women. The symmetric lesions of OLP are often accompanied by burning sensation. The lesions have a low risk of malignant transformation. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics among patients visiting the out-patient department. Material and Method: This study was conducted for a duration of 1 year. Patients diagnosed with OLP according to the modified WHO diagnostic criteria and histopathological examination were included in the study. Demographic data, detailed history and clinical findings of the patients with OLP were recorded. Results: Among a total of 15,670 individuals examined, 8973 (57.26%) were male and 6877 (42.74%) were female. Patients diagnosed with OLP were 85, among whom 44 (51.8%) were female and 41 (48.2%) were male. The overall prevalence of OLP is 0.54%. Symptomatic OLP was noted in 77.6 % of the patients. The most frequently affected oral sites were buccal mucosa, tongue and gingiva. The most frequently associated systemic diseases were diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion: The data observed is mostly similar to previous studies reported. Difference in geographic area and number of enrolled patients may justify the observed differences.
